VillaMedia in Wuppertal in Germany has built a glass cube facility equipped with the photovoltaics of ertex solar.

Glass architecture include solar energy harvesting, to one of the highest standards.

VillaMedia in Wuppertal has implemented the glass cube unit facility, equipped with the photovoltaics of the ‘ertex solar’ Corporation. The proprietors, VillaMedia – in the North-Rhine Westphalian Wuppertal of Germany, is devoted to the organisation of events, and has for some time been quite well aware, that its particular trade and industry is consuming resources to not inconsiderable extent.

Such an event venue involves the consumption of much energy for lighting, cooling, heating, general effects, decoration, catering and transportation. Parallel to the introduction of own energy savings, three items of photovoltaic plant and a block-unit heating- and energy generating power plant have been operated in the past, in order to increase the proportion of self-produced energy, to a rate of a requirement some 80 percent overtime.

At the end of 2013, a solar electric current generating facility was introduced by means of an extremely architecturally exciting glass cube unit with integrated solar cells, as a supplementation thereto. The plant has an installed generating capacity of a total of 3.8 kW and a production volume of the order of the power requirements of a detached family dwelling house. It is of course not one of the largest items of plant around on the market, but it is characterised by its unique design.

The individual glazing panels were designed in collaboration with the architect, Mr. Tilo Guellemann and ertex solar, in order to produce a homogenous visual appearance on the one hand, and a light transparent object, on the other.

On architectural grounds and for reasons of satisfying official heritage requirements, the relatively large glazing elements of up to 480 kg deadweight each, had to be erected on an extremely discreet system of so-called ‘Spider Glass’ point unit supports.

The result is a convincing multifunctional facility. Apart from the ‘power generating unit’ installed in the glazed roofing, a shaded but all the same light area has been created as a result of the additional solar panels. The shaded area contributes evidentially to a considerable extent in providing for a reduction in the cooling energy factor.

Visitors to the VillaMedia will find this roomspace in future as an entrance portal, and this includes access to the newly erected "Innovationszentrum NRW" (an innovation centre sponsored by the government of ‘NRW’ – the German Federal State of North-Rhine Westphalia), which will add to the manifold conference- and event possibilities, for the future. A roomspace in effect with a quite special atmosphere – and this provides a suitable scenic backdrop for a venue of innovation and creativity.
